Sponsor a PayPhone Lady in East Africa
Women bear a disproportionate share of the burden of poverty such as Food; Water; Health; Shelter; Education for children. These are the loads they carry.
A unique partnership between Canada, Kenya and Tanzania offers hope for thousands of women and their families. A one-time donation of $120 provides a woman with a specially designed cell phone, uniform and training to run her own small business as a payphone operator. An additional $80.00 provides your PayPhone Lady with extra airtime to help launch her micro-business. The extra airtime is given as a micro-loan. When she has repaid her loan, the $80.00 becomes available to other PayPhone Ladies.
As a mobile payphone operator she is able to earn an income by selling airtime in her local community. Based on the same technology as traditional pay-phone booths, customers pay a small fee for the use of the mobile phone. She in turn earns 35-50% on each call and/or SMS (text message).
The partners in this micro enterprise initiative are:
- Globaltext: an innovative communications company based in Victoria, B.C.
- NGO's, Foundations and CBO's (Community-Based Organizations)
- Celtel: Kenya's premier cellular phone service provider
- Donors who contribute to the program.
The program will work through existing community based micro-credit groups. The primary beneficiaries will be vulnerable groups such as widows, single mothers and women living with AIDS. Each woman will receive small business training, point of sale material, a specially designed phone and a Celtel uniform.
PayPhone Ladies can earn an average of US$3.50 per day.
